Flowers - my inspiration wall for sketches

Recently, I became quite obsessed with flowers. It seems like a weird thing to be obsessed with given that I don't even own a garden. Sometimes I would walk into cold storage with my mom and sneak off to the flower section to buy a bouquet before she could stop me.

Here are some of my favourite flowers

1. Camelia

This is one of the flowers that I have never seen in Singapore myself. The only reason that I came to know of this flower is because I read a book called "The lady of the Camelias" by Alexandre Fils Dumas - who also wrote the 3 musqueteers.

This flower is often seen in the accessories designed by Coco Chanel herself. I guess next time when I go to France I will try to find a bouquet of these.

I feel like this flower is more subtly elegant than the rose and it certainly took me a while before I fell in love with its simple symmetry.

2. Peony

This is the flower known in Chinese as 牡丹花。 Frankly, I had seen this flower quite often in the Chinese watercolour paintings in my house; but I always thought that this flower didn't exist - like as though it was some mythical creature like the Chinese dragon or the phoenix. Anyhow, one day out of a whim, I decided to google this flower and to my amazement there were people growing peonies in their gardens. I was like WOW... this has been one of the amazing discoveries in my life along with the realisation that Buddha was real guy.

Anyhow, this flower never fails to amaze me... it's so delicate but so beautiful. It's kinda like those chinese concubines from the 16th century who were like both fragile but regal. I hope that on my exchange to Europe or something I can find time to cultivate this flower on my balcony.

3. Lotus

Seriously, every time I see this flower I find myself going Ahmitofu.... I can understand why both the Hindus and Buddhists love this flower so much.

4. Rose

And what would life be without the good old English tea rose.

Unbeknownst to me, there are actually like many many varieties of roses. I got my boyfriend to give me a GIANT DAMASCUS rose before and trust me it was huge lik the size of I would say a grapefruit. Just look at that intricate Damascus rose; I think the difference between the English tea rose and the Damascus rose lies in the number of twirls you can see in the middle. I'm no rose expert so don't quote me on this.

In Singapore, you can hardly find the giant damascus rose and most of our roses are of the modern English tea rose variety. I think it has to do with the climate; the last time I got a giant damascus rose I had trouble keeping it from wilting coz it simply needs a much cooler temperature to maintain.
